IEC 60730 Type K and Type J Thermocouples

A construction is built and tested to a standard. A heater made to your outline has no certified part number of its own, so the approval sits with the end product and with the file you hold — what this factory supplies is the construction, the materials and the test records that let that file be assembled.

Type K and Type J Thermocouples — the construction this guide is about

IEC 60730 as it applies to type k and type j thermocouples: what the document covers, what it deliberately leaves to someone else, and how a made-to-drawing heater is certified at all — which is not the same question as whether a part number is approved.

IEC 60730 — Scope

Automatic electrical controls: the safety standard for thermostats, thermal cutoffs and temperature controllers, including the type 1 / type 2 action classification and the number of cycles a control is tested to.

What IEC 60730 Does Not Cover

A control certified to it is a safe control; it does not follow that a heater fitted with one is a certified appliance.

This is the division of labour to carry away from any heating standard: safety standards decide whether the part can hurt somebody, and say nothing about whether it holds a temperature, lasts five years or matches the last batch. Performance is a specification you write; safety is one the standard writes.

How a Made-to-Drawing Heater Is Certified

A construction is built and tested to a standard. The insulation system, the creepage and clearance distances, the earthing, the lead anchorage, the temperature under fault and the marking are what the test covers — and all of those are properties of the construction rather than of the outline it is die-cut to.

So a custom outline does not have a certificate of its own, and no supplier can honestly hand you one. What is available is the construction file: the standard the build is tested to, the materials list with their own ratings, and the test reports. That is what an approvals engineer needs, and it is what the end product's own certification is built on.

The practical consequence: name IEC 60730 on the enquiry, not after approval. A construction chosen for cost and then asked to pass a standard afterwards usually has to be rebuilt, because the insulation thickness, the creepage distances and the lead anchorage are decided at design time and are not adjustable later.

What a Type K and Type J Thermocouples Is

For temperatures beyond the range of any resistance sensor, and for the fast, robust measurement a thick film or mica heater needs.

A sensing component, specified by its tolerance class, its usable range and its response time. It has no watt density and no outline; it is fitted to a heater or to the surface the heater is warming, and where it is fitted decides what the control loop is actually controlling.

The heat leaves through whatever the component is clamped or bonded to; a sensing component adds no heat of its own and simply has to be in thermal contact with the thing it is reporting on.

The continuous limit of 400 °C is set by the insulation system. The element alloy would run far hotter; it is never the element that decides.

The Other Standards This Construction Is Built To

A heater is rarely governed by one document. This construction is also built and tested to:

Safety, materials, substances and quality system are four separate questions with four separate documents behind them. A part can satisfy all four and still be the wrong heater for the duty, which is what the rest of this page is about.

Control and Protection

This heater has no way of limiting its own temperature. Resistance heating draws roughly the same power whatever the temperature, so with the load removed, the fluid gone, the fan stopped or the sensor open circuit, the element keeps producing watts until something stops it.

The design must therefore contain a control device and, separately, a protective one: a controller with a sensor to hold the set point, and a bimetal thermostat or a one-shot thermal cutoff wired in series with the element to open the circuit if the loop ever fails. The two are not interchangeable — a controller that has lost its sensor cannot protect anything, which is exactly the fault the cutoff exists for.

Attachment and Thermal Contact

A sensing component is fitted where it will read the temperature that matters: against the element for a limit device, against the load for a control device. The two positions give different numbers, and choosing the wrong one is the commonest reason a correctly built loop holds the wrong temperature.

A sensor reads its own junction, not the surface it is near. Bed it in thermal compound, clamp it, or pot it into the assembly: an air gap of a tenth of a millimetre between a thermistor and the plate it is supposed to be measuring is worth several degrees of error, and it is an error the controller cannot see.

How to Specify One

This is a made-to-drawing part, so there is no catalogue number to quote. A quotation is built from the following, and the more of it that arrives with the enquiry the fewer rounds it takes:

  • The temperature to be sensed or switched, and the tolerance the application actually needs.
  • Where the component sits — against the element, in the potting, on the load, or in the airflow.
  • The electrical duty: for a switching device, the voltage, the current and whether the load is AC or DC.
  • Lead length, insulation and termination, and whether the component is fitted by us into a heater assembly or supplied loose.
  • The standard the end product is certified to, so the component chosen is one that fits inside that approval.

Lead time: Samples 7-10 days from approved drawing; production 15-20 days.

These are process limits for the construction, not the specification of one stocked item. Every line is what the factory can hold; what your part holds is fixed on your drawing.

Figures are the published tolerance and rating bands of the standard sensor and control components fitted to these heaters. Sensor tolerance classes follow IEC 60751 for RTDs and IEC 60584 for thermocouples; thermostat and thermal cutoff ratings are the component manufacturers' own.

Outline & Specification Builder

Set the outline, the size, the voltage and the power you have in mind. The drawing redraws to match, and the panel works out the heated area, the watt density and the current — then checks that watt density against what this construction survives in free air and bonded to a heat sink. Those two limits are different by several times, and it is the difference that decides whether a heater lasts.

The numbers come off our own machines

Every unit is measured for resistance, held at its dielectric test voltage for a minute, and measured again for insulation resistance. Sample units from each lot are run under power and imaged. That is why the values on this page are quotable rather than indicative.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum temperature of type k and type j thermocouples?

400 °C continuous, measured at the element. The limit belongs to the insulation system and not to the element alloy, so it is not a figure that can be extended by derating the power.

Does this heater need a thermostat?

Yes. It has no mechanism for limiting its own temperature — with the load removed or the control loop failed it keeps producing the same power — so the design needs a controller with a sensor to hold the set point and, separately, a bimetal thermostat or a one-shot thermal cutoff in series with the element as protection.

How large can one piece be?

Component in a single piece. Larger areas are supplied as tiled zones with separate circuits, which is usually better engineering anyway: separate zones can be controlled separately, and a large single circuit has to carry the whole current at one lead exit.

Is this heater IEC 60730 approved?

The construction is built and tested to IEC 60730; the outline is yours, and a made-to-drawing outline does not carry a certificate of its own. What is available is the construction file — the standard the build is tested to, the material ratings and the test reports — which is what your own product approval is built on.

How do I request a quotation?

Send the outline drawing with the supply voltage, the power or the target temperature, what the heater is bonded to, the ambient and the duty cycle. We respond within one business day.
