How to draw a custom heating film

Every heater we build is made to a drawing, so the fastest way to turn what you have in mind into something that can be quoted is to draw it. Six steps, a few minutes, and you finish with a dimensioned engineering drawing you can send to any supplier — not only to us.

  1. 01 Pick the film family

    Polyimide, silicone rubber, mica, PET/PTC, transparent ITO, graphene, metal-clad thick film, or a custom outline. The choice titles the drawing sheet and sets the sensible defaults; it does not lock anything you draw.

  2. 02 Draw the outline

    Rectangle, disc, ring or any shape you need, to real dimensions in millimetres or inches. Cut-outs, sensor windows and mounting holes go in at this stage, because on a die-cut part they have to be on the drawing before the tool is made.

  3. 03 Dimension it

    Turn on automatic dimensions and the builder offers the width and height of a rectangle, the diameter of a circle, the radius of an arc as you draw. Everything it places is an ordinary dimension you can drag, restyle or give a tolerance.

  4. 04 Route the track and place the leads

    Show where the heating track runs, where the lead wires exit, and where the terminals, connector and temperature sensor sit. The lead exit is the detail most often left off an enquiry and the one most likely to need a second drawing.

  5. 05 Add the notes that decide the quote

    Supply voltage, total wattage, duty temperature, and what the heater is bonded to. That last one decides the permissible watt density and is the question a quotation cannot skip.

  6. 06 Export and send it

    Download the sheet as a PDF, or the geometry as a DXF for CAD. Attach either to an enquiry and we can quote from it directly.

Questions about the drawing tool

Is the heating film drawing tool free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, with no account, no download and no CAD licence. Drawing something does not commit you to an order and we do not see a drawing unless you send it to us.

What file formats can I export?

A PDF of the full drawing sheet, with dimensions, notes and a title block, and a DXF of the geometry for opening in CAD. Both are produced in the browser and download directly.

Do I need CAD experience to use it?

No. The drawing tools work the way a sketch does — click the corners of a rectangle, click a centre and drag a radius — and the automatic dimension feature places the width, height, diameter or radius for you as you draw, so a usable dimensioned drawing takes a few minutes without any drafting background.

What has to be on a heating film drawing before it can be quoted?

The outline with real dimensions, the supply voltage, the total wattage or the surface temperature you need to hold, where the leads exit, and what the heater is bonded to. That last item decides the permissible watt density: the same heater survives several times more power per square centimetre bonded over its full area to metal than it does hanging in still air.

Can I draw a shape that is not a rectangle or a circle?

Yes. Any outline you can draw can be cut, including L-shapes, rings, slots, cut-outs and free-form profiles. Inside corners are cut with a radius rather than sharp, because a sharp inside corner in a film is where a tear starts.

Which heating film types can I draw?
